Government may back bill allowing children born in Ireland to receive citizenship

Proposed legislation to allow children who were born in Ireland and have lived in the State for three years to be considered for Irish citizenship may receive government backing.
Labour Senator Ivana Bacik, a qualified barrister and legal academic, introduced the Irish Nationality and Citizenship (Naturalisation of Minors Born in Ireland) Bill to the Seanad in 2018.
Last night’s committee stage debate on the bill adjourned after an hour to allow for discussions to take place between Senator Bacik, Justice Minister Helen McEntee and officials in the Department of Justice.
Speaking afterwards, Senator Bacik said: “I look forward to meeting with Minister McEntee and her officials in the next few weeks to discuss this bill further and to negotiate any amendments that may be necessary.
“Labour will work constructively with the government to progress this bill and to secure support for it when it returns for adjourned committee stage in January 2021.”
