Government to prioritise increased powers for competition watchdog
Ministers have met with Ireland’s competition watchdog to discuss plans to boost its regulatory powers.
Robert Troy, minister for trade promotion, digital and companies regulation, met with representatives of the Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (CCPC) this week.
They discussed matters including the ongoing study into the public liability insurance market, increased powers for the CPPC by way of the administrative sanctions, and forthcoming consumer protection legislation.
Mr Troy highlighted the “pressing need” for publication of the study so that the recommendations can be implemented to improve customer consumer choice without delay.
He reaffirmed that legislation to strengthen the watchdog will be prioritised in the next Dáil session.
The minister said: “This legislation, once enacted, will meet the Programme for Government commitment to give the CCPC & ComReg additional enforcement powers.”
