Guantanamo Bay lawyer to speak out against Special Criminal Court
A high-profile US lawyer who represented Guantanamo Bay detainees and NSA whistleblower Chelsea Manning will argue for the abolition of Ireland’s Special Criminal Court at an online event next week.
Nancy Hollander will be joined on a panel by Osgur Breatnach, who was wrongly convicted in the Special Criminal Court for his alleged role in the Sallins train robbery, at the event on Wednesday 26 January, 6pm.
Ms Hollander is widely known for helping to secure the release of Mohamedou Ould Salahi, who was imprisoned at Guantanamo Bay for 14 years without charge. This was fictionalised in the award-winning film, The Mauritanian.
The free event has been organised by the Irish Council for Civil Liberties (ICCL), which has called for the abolition of the court since the group was founded in 1976. It has made a submission to the independent review group which is due to publish a report on the court in April.
