NI: High Court grants leave to review of 1972 NI shooting investigation

The High Court in Belfast has granted Margaret McQuillan leave to seek a judicial review against the PSNI over alleged failures by the Royal Ulster Constabulary (RUC) in the investigation of her sister’s death.
Ms McQuillan’s sister, Jean Symth-Campbell, was shot dead in west Belfast in June 1972 at the age of 24.
Her family believe the RUC wrongly blamed republican paramilitaries for the shooting and have alleged involvement by covert UK military forces.
The judicial review was sought because the family did not believe the PSNI had the independence to fairly probe the allegations.
Barry Woods of Ó Muirigh Solicitors, acting for Ms McQuillan, said: “The judge was persuaded that an arguable case has been raised by the family in relation to their concern over the PSNI’s involvement in this case.”
He added: “If successful at the full hearing of this seminal case, it could have significant impact for a great many other landmark cases.”
