High Court rejects Tony Blair prosecution bid

The High Court has ruled that Tony Blair should not be prosecuted for his role in the 2003 Iraq War.

The Lord Chief Justice, Lord Thomas of Cwmgiedd and Mr Justice Ouseley said today that there was no crime of aggression known to English law under which the former Prime Minister could be charged.

While the crime of aggression is recognised in international law, the judges said it does not apply retroactively.

In their judgment they relied on a Supreme Court case which saw an appeal by anti-war protestors, that their damage was justified as it prevented the crime of aggression in Iraq, rejected.

“There is no prospect of the supreme court departing from the decision in Jones,” Lord Thomas said.
