Housing Commission fails to reach consensus on referendum
The Housing Commission has failed to reach a consensus on constitutional change and is set to publish two rival reports as a result, according to The Irish Times.
The Commission was tasked with considering housing policy in general as well as bringing forward proposals on the wording for a referendum on housing by the end of July.
However, The Irish Times reports that the Commission is likely to publish both a majority and minority report — as did the recent government review of the Special Criminal Court — and they could be submitted as late as October.
The newspaper cites sources which say there is only one proposed wording in the Commission’s draft report and it is opposed by at least two members of the Commission, with the issue dominating meetings of the group.
A spokesperson for the Housing Commission said: “Commission members have been engaging on a collaborative basis and it is expected that all reports will be done in agreement.”
A two-day conference was held at University College Dublin last year to help develop the proposed constitutional amendment, with contributions from legal experts as well as housing experts.
