The session began with opening remarks from Michael Conlon SC, the chairperson of IACBA, followed by Tom Coughlan, the chairperson of IILA.

Ms Justice Mary Faherty then delivered an insightful chairperson’s address, paving the way for a series of thought-provoking presentations.

Sunniva McDonagh SC took the stage first, delving into the complexities of judicial review and the unravelling of children’s rights, a topic that shed light on the challenges faced by children born in Ireland to EU treaty rights parents whose statuses were retrospectively revoked. Following her, David Leonard BL offered his expertise on national security, deportation, and procedural rights, drawing from his extensive experience in immigration and asylum law.

Katie Mannion, representing the Irish Refugee Council, then took the audience through the evolving landscape of material reception conditions, new safe country designations, and procedural changes for international protection applicants. Her presentation highlighted the pressing need for focused attention on the reception needs of international protection applicants, given the increasing instances of homelessness among newly arriving applicants.

The event concluded with a Q&A session, allowing attendees to engage directly with the speakers and deepen their understanding of the topics discussed. Mr Conlon provided the closing remarks, wrapping up a day filled with valuable insights and collaborative learning.
