Imprisonment rate for burglars varies wildly from region to region

New figures show that prison sentences for burglars vary greatly across different parts of the country, The Irish Times reports.
The imprisonment rate in burglary cases varied from 39 per cent in Galway to 74 per cent in Dublin in the first seven months of 2017, according to figures released under FOI legislation.
The average imprisonment rate for burglary offences in the District Court was 65 per cent over the period, down from 70 per cent in 2016.
The figures seen by The Irish Times cover more than 11,000 sentences handed down between 2010 and July 2017.
The figures show a steady decline in the imprisonment rate in Limerick District Court (from 83 per cent in 2011 to 49 per cent in 2016) and in Cork District Court (from 77 per cent in 2011 to 65 per cent in 2016).
However, the figure increased in Dublin from 46 per cent in 2011 to 74 per cent in 2016, the highest in the country.
