#InPictures: Sports law conference reflects on Paris Olympics
Sports lawyers and athletes reflected on the 2024 Paris Olympics — the most successful in Ireland’s history — at the Sports Law Bar Association (SLBA) annual conference last week.
The conference opened with a panel titled ‘Fair Sport: Selection & Integrity at Paris 2024’.
The panellists, pictured above, were Aoife Farrelly BL, chair of the Sports Law Bar Association; Paddy Murphy, solicitor at Ogier; Sarah Keane, CEO of Swim Ireland; Ms Justice Martina Christina Spreitzer-Kropiunik, vice-president of the Criminal Court of Vienna and CAS anti-doping judge; Gary McCarthy SC; and Thomas Byrne TD, the Irish government’s minister for sport and physical education.
Other panels discussed a range of different topics in sports law, including issues which arose before, during and after the Olympics.
The final panel, ‘Chasing Dreams: The Athlete’s Journey to the Olympic Games’, heard first-hand accounts from athletes about their journeys to qualification, the obstacles they faced and their time in Paris.
Pictured above are panellists Derry Mcveigh, co-founder of Silverhatch Sports; Thammy Nguyen, Gough Olympic weightlifter; Emma Davey BL, secretary of the Sports Law Bar Association; and Jack Kelly OLY, two-time Irish Olympian and trainee solicitor.
Pictured here is Rebecca Lacy BL speaking with Yvonne Nolan, general counsel for World Rugby; Gavin Noble, Paris Games Chef de Mission for Team Ireland; and Martin Gordon PLY, Paralympian cyclist and barrister, about the highs and hurdles of navigating the 2024 Paris Games.
