James Douglas to head Irish rule of law NGO
Human rights lawyer James Douglas has been appointed as executive director of Irish Rule of Law International (IRLI).
Mr Douglas succeeds Aonghus Kelly, who has spent the last six months on sabbatical with the EU Advisory Mission Ukraine.
In February, Mr Kelly was featured as Irish Legal News’ Lawyer of the Month, discussing his work helping Ukraine prepare for future war crimes trials.
In a statement, IRLI said: “We want to express our deepest gratitude to Aonghus for his outstanding leadership and wish him all the best with his important work with EU Advisory Mission Ukraine supporting the prosecution of international crimes in Ukraine, where he has been on sabbatical for the last six months.
“We are also delighted to announce that James Douglas will be taking over as our new executive director. With vast experience in human rights law, James has been with us as director of programmes of IRLI since 2020 and has already made significant contributions to our work.
“Please join us in thanking Aonghus and welcoming James to his new position.”
