Judge rejects State bid to seize proceeds of prostitution

A judge at Dublin Circuit Criminal Court has rejected a bid by the State to seize funds which were stolen from two sex workers and later recovered, the Irish Examiner reports.
Judge Patrick McCartan was ruling in the case of Mantas Grazevicius, 32, who was accused of false imprisonment and robbery of two women at a hotel in Dublin in 2013.
The two women had come from the Czech Republic to work out of a hotel room for the weekend, accumulating around €5,000 in cash.
Mr Grazevicius and another man posed as a client in order to gain access to the room before stealing money from the pair.
Judge McCartan sentenced him to three years in jail.
However, he rejected a bid by prosecuting counsel Tony McGillicuddy BL to have €2,675 of the women’s money turned over to the State as proceeds of prostitution.
He asked the court, apparently rhetorically: “Is it open to me to direct the money be returned to the ladies?”
Judge McCartan then said he would do so as the money was “hard-earned”.
