Law student wrongly arrested over TV license settles damages action

A law student wrongly arrested and imprisoned over non-payment of a TV license has settled her action for damages, the Irish Independent reports.
Amy Daly, 27, sued the Garda Commissioner, the Governor of the Dochas Centre at Mountjoy Prison, the Justice Minister, and the State over the incident on 9 January 2015.
Gardaí came to Ms Daly’s home with an arrest warrant with regard to a TV license even though she had been collecting €4 TV license stamps since October 2014 and had already collected €144 worth.
She was incarcerated at Tullamore Garda Station for the afternoon and then detained in Mountjoy Prison for several hours.
The State parties admitted false imprisonment, breach of Ms Daly’s constitutional right to liberty, negligence and breach of duty.
The case opened before a judge and jury in the High Court yesterday but was settled following talks between the parties. Mr Justice Bernard Barton made a costs ruling in favour of Ms Daly.
