NI: Lawyers for Bloody Sunday victims ask PPS to reconsider prosecution
Lawyers for the families of nine of those killed on Bloody Sunday have asked the Public Prosecution Service (PPS) to look again at its decision not to prosecute nine soldiers for murder and attempted murder, The Irish Times reports.
The lawyers also argue that Solider F, the former member of the British army’s Parachute Regiment, should face a further three charges of murder and two of attempted murder in addition to those he already faces.
In a legal submission to the PPS, seen by The Irish Times, Madden and Finucane Solicitors argues that the service “erred” by declining to prosecute the soldiers.
A spokeswoman for the PPS said: “The PPS is currently reviewing decisions not to prosecute a number of suspects reported by police in connection with the events on Bloody Sunday, as requested by a number of the victims and families of deceased persons involved.
“We are now in a position to further progress these reviews.”
She was unable, however, to give a timeframe for the process.
