NI: Lord Justice Gillen to address media law conference in Belfast
The Rt Honourable Lord Justice Gillen will address delegates at the opening of a major media law conference in Belfast next month.
A Brave New World for the Media and Creative Industries Landscape, a conference hosted by the non-profit Belfast Solicitors Association (BSA), will bring together top lawyers, journalists and media professionals from across Northern Ireland.
The conference takes place in the Parliament Buildings on Friday 26 February 2016.
Lord Justice Gillen, who was appointed as a Lord Justice of Appeal in Northern Ireland on 5 September 2014, will make an address headlined “Distilling the Frenzy”.
Other speakers include Olivia O’Kane, a member of the BSA committee and media lawyer at Northern Ireland’s largest commercial law firm, Carson McDowell.
Ms O’Kane told Irish Legal News that the growth of Northern Ireland’s media and creative industries meant there was a “greater need for understanding of media related issues and the provision of excellent media law and media related legal advice”.
She added: “This conference is to celebrate NI’s media and creative industries, to recognise the excellent work in this area from a non-legal perspective, and then to deal with some of the challenges and difficulties from a legal perspective and non-legal view.
“It also welcomes an opportunity for lawyers to come together with the media industry and business community.”
The event has been sponsored by Hiscox and is open to lawyers and non-lawyers alike.
The full programme is available from the BSA website.
