NI: Maghaberry becomes first UK prison to allow visits from autistic children
Maghaberry Prison has become the first in the country to allow visits by autistic children, under a pioneering new initiative.
A specially adapted crèche with sensory toys and apparatus has been installed to allow autistic children to visit their incarcerated fathers in a bid to improve rehabilitation, the Belfast Telegraph reports.
Governor Dave Savage said: “The reactions in those rooms are worth their weight in gold - stones have cried.”
More than a dozen prisoners are already seeing their autistic and disabled children and grandchildren in the dedicated unit.
Mr Savage added: “Positive relationships and family connection can have huge benefits for people in custody and their families, and Maghaberry recognises the need to support and enhance a family life balance.
“Research also indicates that positive relationships can significantly reduce the likelihood of reoffending, thus contributing to a safer society.”
