NI: Ministry of Defence to pay £700,000 to two Bloody Sunday families

The Ministry of Defence has agreed to pay a combined £700,000 in compensation to the the families of two men shot dead on Bloody Sunday in 1972.
The family of Gerard McKinney, shot dead at 35, will receive £625,000 in compensation, while the family of Michael McDaid, killed at 20, will receive £75,000.
Fearghál Shiels of Madden & Finucane Solicitors, representing the McKinney family, told Irish Legal News that the cases were settled following discussions between the parties.
Mr Justice Gerry McAlinden congratulated the lawyers involved in the test cases for reaching settlements without the need for distressing evidence.
Last week, the High Court judge awarded £193,000 to a man who was shot in the face on Bloody Sunday as a 17-year-old.
The Ministry of Defence has suggested that nine other Bloody Sunday cases may now reach a speedy conclusion.
