NI: Modern slavery strategy to be published only every three years

The Department of Justice is to seek permission from MLAs to publish a modern slavery and human trafficking strategy every three years instead of every one year.
Writing in the foreword to the fourth annual strategy, Justice Minister Naomi Long said the government’s “understanding of these crimes and the needs of victims has increased” since 2015.
The Human Trafficking and Exploitation (Criminal Justice and Support for Victims) Act (Northern Ireland) 2015 requires the Department to publish a strategy document “at least once in every year”.
Mrs Long said it is “clear that there are a number of complex and important issues that will require longer term consideration and, in some cases, legislative change”.
“I therefore intend to move from an annual strategy to a three-year strategy, subject to the Assembly’s agreement, to enable a comprehensive framework for both short and long-term policy priorities, actions and measurable outcomes to be developed,” she said.
