She will succeed Mr Justice George Birmingham, who has held the post since 2018 and is due to retire on Sunday 4 August 2024.
Justice minister Helen McEntee said: “Ms Justice Costello is an experienced judge of the Court of Appeal, with valuable expertise across all areas of law. I would like to congratulate Ms Justice Costello and wish her every success in her new role.”
She added: “I would also like to thank Mr Justice Birmingham for his many years of distinguished service and wish him well.”
Ms Justice Costello was educated at University College Dublin, the University Oxford and the King’s Inns, calling to the Bar in 1988 and becoming a senior counsel in 2010.
Her judicial career began with her appointment to the High Court in 2014, followed by her elevation to the Court of Appeal four years later.
