Murder of Milosevic lawyer prompts strike in Belgrade
The murder in Belgrade of the lawyer who represented Slobodan Milosevic at The Hague has led to a strike by criminal defence practitioners in Serbia.
Dragoslav Ognjanovic, 57, was shot dead near his home in the city on Saturday, while his son was wounded.
The Serbian Bar Association said the murder should be viewed in the context of increasing threats to lawyers.
It said in a statement that Mr Ognjanovic’s death “showed in a most drastic way the circumstances in which lawyers in Serbia conduct their professional work”.
It added: “This killing is only the latest in a series of numerous attacks on lawyers, many of which have remained unsolved.”
Milosevic had faced charges including genocide but died in 2006 in detention before the end of his trial.
