Nearly €4 million awarded to victims of crime organisations

Organisations which support victims of crime have been awarded just under €4 million in government funding.

The funding has been allocated to 10 national victim support organisations, including general victims support organisations, specialist organisations, and services in support of victims of human trafficking.

They are AdVic, the Crime Victims Helpline, Victim Support at Court, Missing in Ireland, Tourist SOS, Support After Homicide, Doras, the Immigrant Council of Ireland, Ruhama and the Migrants Rights Centre Ireland (MRCI).

Organisations assisting victims of domestic, sexual or gender-based violence no longer receive funding through this particular fund, as they are now funded through Cuan, the national domestic, sexual and gender-based violence agency.

Justice minister Jim O’Callaghan said: “Coming forward to report a crime can be a traumatic experience for victims and I am determined to ensure that the criminal justice system empowers victims to have the confidence to report an offence, knowing they will be supported, informed, and treated respectfully for the entirety of the difficult journey they have to face.

“This funding will help to ensure that services are available to victims who need them, to a consistently high standard, and throughout the State.

“In addition to providing funding for organisations that offer vital support services such as court accompaniment and helplines for victims of crime, I am also pleased to announce funding for specialised organisations supporting victims of human trafficking.”

He added: “We know that the needs of victims of crime can differ depending on their individual circumstances and tailoring supports to meet those individual needs is the most effective approach.

“This further demonstrates my Department’s commitment to the provision of practical support to all victims of crime.”
