New book explores disability law and policy

A new book on disability law and policy provides a multidisciplinary examination of the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities.

Disability Law and Policy: An Analysis of the UN Convention was published by Clarus Press today.

The book is edited by Dr Charles O’Mahony, lecturer in Public Law at NUI Galway, and Professor Gerard Quinn, director of the Centre on International Disability Law & Policy at the Law School of NUI Galway.

The book deals with:

  • Part 1: Disability & Intersectionality
  • Part 2: Right to Legal Capacity
  • Part 3: Mental Health Law and Disability
  • Part 4: The Right to Independent Living
  • Part 5: The Right to Inclusive Education
  • Part 6: Employment and Persons with Disabilities
  • Part 7: Comparative and Regional Perspectives
  • Mr O’Mahony told Irish Legal News: “The UN Convention requires law and policy reform throughout the world and Disability Law and Policy: An Analysis of the UN Convention identifies what State parties need to do to comply with international human rights law.”

He added: “This is particularly relevant for Ireland as, while Ireland was one of the first States to sign the CRPD, it is the only EU member state not to have ratified it.”
