New justice minister expected in next government

Helen McEntee addressing barristers in 2023

Helen McEntee is unlikely to stay on as justice minister in the next government, according to reports.

Coalition talks between Fianna Fáil, Fine Gael and others are under way following last month’s election, but few expect there to be a new government before Irish Legal News returns from the Christmas and New Year break on Friday 3 January 2025.

According to the Irish Independent, Mrs McEntee, who has held the post of justice minister since 2020, has been tipped for a move to the Department of Enterprise, Trade and Employment.

Housing minister Darragh O’Brien has been named as a potential successor — though if the Department of Justice is going to Fianna Fáil, many will see barrister Jim O’Callaghan as a more natural fit for the post.

The Irish Independent reports that James Browne may be appointed as minister of state responsible for a new domestic affairs function within the Department of Justice, focused on immigration.
