New research to explore policing of minority communities in Ireland

The Policing Authority has commissioned new research into the experience and perceptions of policing within diverse and minority communities in Ireland.
Dr Vicky Conway, an associate professor at DCU School of Law and Government and an expert on policing, will carry out the research after being awarded the €30,000 contract following a competitive tender process.
The research will be conducted with two NGO partners: Shane O’Curry, director of the Irish Network Against Racism (INAR), and Rodrigo Souza Silva, community organiser with the Brazilian Left Front (BLF).
Helen Hall, chief executive of the Policing Authority, said: “The performance of the Garda Síochána as it serves an increasingly diverse community is an area of enduring interest to the Authority. We are very pleased to award this important piece of research to such a strong and diverse research team.”
The research will commence in the coming weeks and will focus on the experiences of two communities — those of African descent in Ireland, and the Brazilian community in Ireland. It is expected that the research will be published in 2023.
