Northern Ireland Human Rights Commission secures UN re-accreditation

The Northern Ireland Human Rights Commission (NIHRC) has been re-accredited by the United Nations as an A-status national human rights institution in spite of concerns over budget cuts.

The watchdog received an emergency funding boost last September after an independent review found its budget was “inadequate and restricting its ability to deliver its statutory duties”.

The review was prompted by the UN repeatedly deferring a re-accreditation decision since 2022.

The re-accreditation was formally received at the Global Alliance of Nation Human Rights Institutions (GANHRI) general assembly which took place in Geneva this week.

Chief commissioner Alyson Kilpatrick said: “We are delighted that the Commission has been re-accredited as an A-status NHRI after a lengthy deferral. This reflects some recent reassurance as to our funding arrangements.

“We will continue to press for long-term financial sustainability which is essential to our independence and ability to fulfil the important job we were established for and have been doing for 25 years.”
