NI: Northern Ireland lawyers given rare insight into Commonwealth mediation
Northern Ireland lawyers have been given a rare insight into the important and changing role of mediation in dispute resolution in Commonwealth countries.
The Commonwealth Lawyers Association (CLA) event, taking place in Law Society House, heard from Mr Justice Vasheist Kokaram from the High Court of Trinidad and Tobago, who offered his unique perspective on mediation.
The event was also addressed by keynote speakers including the Lord Chief Justice for Northern Ireland, Sir Declan Morgan, and the newly-elected CLA president, Belfast lawyer Brian Speers.
Gary Adair, president and head of commercial disputes at Wilson Nesbitt, also spoke on the outcome of a recent judicial review concerning mediation and legal aid.
Commenting after the event, Mr Speers said: “This event highlights the growing importance of mediation as a means to resolve disputes in commonwealth countries. It is evident from our that speakers that mediation continues to provide effective solutions in in an ever increasing complex legal landscape.”
