Northern Ireland sub-postmasters receive confirmation of quashed convictions
Northern Ireland’s Department of Justice has issued letters to former sub-postmasters whose convictions have been quashed through legislation.
Madden & Finucane Solicitors said four of its clients have now received letters confirming their convictions have been quashed under the Post Office (Horizon Systems) Act 2024.
The legislation, which came into force in May, provides for the quashing of convictions for certain offences alleged to have been committed while the faulty Horizon system was in use by the Post Office. It also allows for the deletion of cautions for those offences.
The letters include one to Lee Williamson, who had related convictions quashed by the Court of Appeal earlier this month.
Michael Madden, of Madden & Finucane Solicitors, said: “We are delighted that four of our clients have had their convictions quashed after instructing us to challenge their Post Office Horizon convictions.
“The convictions ruined the lives of my clients, including that of a woman who received an 18-month suspended custodial sentence.
“We look forward to applying for immediate redress under the new Horizon convictions redress scheme on behalf of our clients.
“We continue to work with the DOJ in respect of more clients who are still waiting for the DOJ to complete their process of identifying convictions that have been quashed by the new Act.”
Mr Williamson said: “When I started out on the process of seeking legal advice, my primary objective was to clear my name and get my convictions overturned.
“I hope everyone who was falsely convicted will get exonerated without any further delay.”
