Number of English and Welsh solicitors applying to join Irish roll remains strong

English and Welsh solicitors are continuing to join the Irish roll of solicitors in significant numbers nearly three years on from the Brexit vote, new figures reveal.
A total of 2,772 solicitors from England and Wales have been admitted to the Irish roll, according to the latest Law Society of Ireland numbers, and a further 700 applications are being processed.
A total of 729 solicitors have applied to register in 2019 so far, close to the record 806 who applied in 2016 and well ahead of the 547 who applied in 2017 and the 690 who applied in 2018.
Of the 19,688 solicitors on the Irish roll, around one in seven (14 per cent) are English and Welsh solicitors who have enrolled since the EU referendum.
A number of major international firms have expanded into Ireland since the referendum. European firm Fieldfisher announced its acquisition of Irish firm McDowell Purcell last week, while Pinsent Masons, Simmons & Simmons and Lewis Silkin have already moved in.
