Oberstown sees significant improvements over past year

Significant improvements have been reported at the Oberstown Children Detention Centre since its reorganisation last June.

Delegates attending the Building the Future event in Oberstown today heard from experts reflecting on the progress following the amalgamation of Trinity House School, Oberstown Boys School and Oberstown Girls School last June.

Following the closure of St Patrick’s Institution this March, young male offenders under the age of 18 who are sentenced to a period of detention by the courts are sent to Oberstown.

There are currently 29 children in detention or remand at Oberstown, which can hold 48 children, according to the centre’s annual report.

Speaking at Oberstown today, Children’s Minister Dr Katherine Zappone said: “Oberstown is a most important part of our youth justice system and its successful operation is critical to ensuring that children are supported in their learning and development.

“Our ultimate objective is to ensure that the optimum care and attention continues to be given to children residing in Oberstown. Essential to this is ensuring that the people working in Oberstown are supported through good organisation, training and development.”

Oberstown Director Pat Bergin added: “Significant improvements had been made on buildings and facilities on the campus and we have enhanced Campus policies and services as well as training and supports for staff.”
