Office of the Attorney General releases legal fees figures

Figures released by the Office of the Attorney General show that former Tánaiste, Senator Michael McDowell received almost €180,000 in legal fees from the State last year, the Irish Independent reports.

The numbers come from a freedom of information request, show that the former leader of the defunct Progress Democrats was given €179,845 for his work on 12 civil cases.

The figure is nearly three times his fees in 2015, received for four cases.

It is part of a €12.1 million sum paid out in fees by the Office of the Attorney General in 2016.

Senator McDowell, a former justice minister, receives a salary of €65,000. He previously said he donates his State pensions to charity.

Ciaran Toland BL received the highest amount, at €317,374, while Conor Power SC was given €309,646 for his work across 42 cases.
