Open verdict returned by inquest into Dún Laoghaire solicitor's drowning

An inquest into the death of Dún Laoghaire solicitor David Montgomery has returned an open verdict.

Mr Montgomery, who was managing partner of Thomas Montgomery & Son Solicitors, died by drowning in October 2022 at the age of 54.

Dublin District Coroner’s Court heard that the firm was at the time being investigated by the Law Society in relation to an estimated €1.7 million deficit in its client account, The Irish Times reports.

Lawyers for Mr Montgomery’s wife asked the inquest to consider returning a verdict of accidental death.

The coroner, Dr Clare Keane, found there was not enough evidence to conclude that the death was accidental, intentional or due to misadventure.
