Over €500m spent on public inquiries since 1990s
Ireland has spent over €500 million on tribunals of inquiry, commissions of investigations and other inquiries in the past 25 years, according to new figures.
Figures released to The Irish Times under freedom of information legislation show that €517 million has been spent on seven tribunals of inquiry, 12 commissions of investigation, one commission to inquire and three reports.
The largest contributor to the costs was the Mahon Tribunal, which has cost €143 million so far and is expected to incur further costs.
On average, tribunals have cost the State €53 million each while commissions of investigation have cost €4.7 million each.
