Pakistan: Villagers arrested after ordering retaliatory rape of 14-year-old girl
Fourteen people in a Pakistani village have been arrested for allegedly ordering that a teenage girl be raped as punishment for a rape committed by her brother.
The incident occurred in the village of Raja Ram in Muzaffarabad, near the city of Multan, the AFP reports.
Allah Baksh, a police official said: “A jirga (village council) had ordered the rape of a 16-year-old girl as punishment, as her brother had raped a 12-year-old.”
He explained that a man approached the village council to complain that his cousin had raped his 12-year-old sister.
In response, the council ordered the complainant to rape the sister of the accused, which he did.
Rashid Taheem, who headed up the investigation, said: “Both the parties had filed cases of rape against each other at the local police station after the incident that happened last week.”
He added: “We have arrested 14 people of the village council so far” and added that the “main accused”, the first man accused of rape, was still at large.
Jirgas are illegal in Pakistan and have come under criticism for their decisions.
