Part-time coroners paid more than €100k in 2014

Six part-time coroners earned more than €100,000 in 2014, according to figures published by The Irish Times.

The latest Coroner Service figures show that 40 coroners received €3.17m in aggregate gross fees over the course of the year.

Those who earned more than €100,000 in 2014 are:

  • Frank O’Connell for Cork South and West - €164,194
  • Dr Ciaran MacLoughlin in Galway West - €158,581
  • Dr Denis Cusack in Kildare - €126,040
  • Dr Seán Nixon in Wexford - €114,428
  • Ronan Maguire in Louth - €101,237
  • Helen Lucey in Kerry North and West - €101,000
  • The fees include a basic retainer and a per-case fee.

    A spokesperson for the Coroner Service told The Irish Times: “A coroner is on call 24 hours a day, seven days a week 52 weeks per year to deal with reports of sudden deaths in his or her area.”
