NI: Police officer in judge arrest attempt to appeal sentence
The PSNI officer who attempted to arrest a judge during court proceedings has confirmed he will appeal against his three month prison sentence.
Thomas Anthony Carlin, 43, will seek leave to appeal his sentence to the UK Supreme Court at a specially convened hearing in Belfast tonight.
The Lord Chief Justice, Sir Declan Morgan, sitting with Mr Justice Horner, will hear the application at 7pm tonight after time pressures prevented the application from being heard yesterday.
Ciarán Shiels, solicitor at Madden & Finucane Solicitors, has been appointed to represent Mr Carlin.
Speaking ahead of the hearing, Mr Shiels said: “It is an unprecedented step for the Divisional Court to convene on a Friday night to consider an application for leave to appeal to the UK Supreme Court.
“If leave is granted, we have indicated we intend to make an immediate application for bail pending the determination of the Supreme Court proceedings.”
