Recruitment warning over proposal for government lawyers to work in open-plan offices

Forcing government lawyers to work in an open-plan office could lead to recruitment issues, the Chief State Solicitor’s Office (CSSO) has warned.

The CSSO told the Office of Public Works (OPW) that an open-plan layout in the planned new headquarters for the CSSO and the broader Office of the Attorney General would pose a number of problems.

In a business plan submitted to the OPW and seen by The Irish Times, the CSSO said it would undermine confidentiality and conflict with lawyers’ need for “quiet concentration and focus”, among other things.

It also warned that adopting an open-plan environment could make it more difficult for the CSSO to recruit legal staff, especially as it “cannot match private sector pay scales”.

The CSSO and the Office of the Attorney General are expected to relocate from their current offices to a new headquarters near the Four Courts.
