NI: Retired solicitor withdraws from appointment as standards commissioner

Retired solicitor Paul Kennedy has unexpectedly withdrawn from the recruitment process for the Northern Ireland Assembly’s commissioner for standards.
Mr Kennedy was nominated earlier this month for the role, which has responsibility for ensuring that MLAs uphold high standards of conduct in public life.
His appointment was expected to be approved by MLAs yesterday, but the debate was cancelled at short notice because Mr Kennedy had withdrawn, BBC News reports.
A spokesperson for the Assembly said: “The assembly commission will now seek to identify another candidate as soon as possible.”
Mr Kennedy qualified as a solicitor in 1983 and spent 32 years in private practice, including 28 years as principal in his own firm.
He initially worked in the field of commercial law with a firm in Belfast, but later moved into more general practice.
He has extensive investigative experience in a wide variety of roles and across a number of sectors and holds a Masters’ Degree in Company Law.
