Rossa Fanning SC to address ICJ on Palestine tomorrow
Attorney General Rossa Fanning SC will appear before the International Court of Justice (ICJ) tomorrow morning to make Ireland’s submissions in a landmark case concerning Israel’s occupation of Gaza and the West Bank.
The case, which is entirely separate from the proceedings initiated by South Africa against Israel under the Genocide Convention late last year, follows a request from the UN General Assembly for an advisory opinion on Israel’s rule over the territories since 1967.
More than 50 countries, the African Union, the Arab League and the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation are set to participate in the proceedings.
The questions which have been referred to the top UN court are:
- What are the legal consequences arising from the ongoing violation by Israel of the right of the Palestinian people to self-determination, from its prolonged occupation, settlement and annexation of the Palestinian territory occupied since 1967, including measures aimed at altering the demographic composition, character and status of the Holy City of Jerusalem, and from its adoption of related discriminatory legislation and measures?
- How do the policies and practices of Israel… affect the legal status of the occupation, and what are the legal consequences that arise for all States and the United Nations from this status?
Mr Fanning will make an oral submission on behalf of Ireland tomorrow, Thursday 22 February, at 10.40am Irish time.
The hearings will be streamed live and on demand in the two official languages of the court on the court’s website and on UN Web TV.
