State told to expect more UN cases over abortion in absence of constitutional change

A pro-life group has warned Ireland will face further cases before the UN Human Rights Committee if the Eighth Amendment is not repealed.
Leah Hoctor, regional director of the Centre for Reproductive Rights (CRR), addressed the Oireachtas committee on the Eighth Amendment yesterday, The Irish Times reports.
Ms Hoctor said international bodies were “watching and waiting” for Ireland to take action after repeated rebukes.
She said the CRR was not aware of further cases, but anticipated that there would be further actions if there is not constitutional change.
Her warning came a day after the State was forced to pay €30,000 to a woman who the UN committee said was subjected to cruel, inhuman and degrading treatment because of Ireland’s abortion laws.
