Ten firms paid over €18 million in legal costs in medical negligence cases last year
Over €18 million was paid out by the State Claims Agency (SCA) in legal costs to 10 law firms involved in medical negligence cases last year.
Augustus Cullen Law Solicitors was paid nearly €6.8 million after representing plaintiffs in 46 claims last year.
The next highest amount was paid to Callan Tansey, which was paid €2.6 million in relation to 33 claims.
Cork-based Cantillons Solicitors was paid nearly €2 million in relation to 16 claims.
Cian O’Carroll Solicitors was paid €1.8 million in relation to 15 claims and Damien Tansey Solicitors was paid €1 million in relation to four claims.
The next five firms were all paid less than €1 million: Ivor Fitzpatrick & Co Solicitors was paid €930,000 in relation to five claims; Orpen Franks Solicitors was paid €865,000 in relation to seven claims; M.M. Halley & Son Solicitors was paid €765,000 in relation to four claims; C.M. Haughey Solicitors was paid €700,000 in relation to four claims; and Gallagher Shatter Solicitors was paid €685,000 in relation to one claim.
The figures were published by Health Minister Simon Harris following a written question from Michael McGrath TD.
