For 31 years, the firm has provided an annual scholarship to students from the Athlone, Moate, Ferbane, Ballymahon, Roscommon, Ballinasloe and Tullamore school areas who attain the highest Leaving Certificate points and have chosen to pursue a legal course at a third-level institution.

The scholarship fund is worth over €2,500 in total, with a €1,200 award for first place, €600 for second place and €300 for third place. In recognition of the schools’ contribution, the firm also donates €500 to the winning school.

The firm has also, since 2000, presented the Perpetual Trophy to the school with the highest cumulative points for law students within that year. The winner of the 2023 school prize is the Bower Secondary School.

The first place student winner of 2023 is Mary Doyle from Athlone, a past pupil of the Bower Secondary School who is now studying law at Trinity College Dublin.

The second-place winner of 2023 is Kate Mannion from Athlone, also a past pupil of the Bower Secondary School, who is continuing her studies at University College Dublin.

There are two joint third place winners, Ashling Kenny and Ella May Dowling, both former pupils at the Bower Secondary School. Ms Kenny is currently studying law at the University of Galway while Ms Dowling is studying in University College Cork.

Speaking at an awards ceremony at the firm’s office, Tormeys partner and joint head of defence litigation Declan O’Flaherty praised all the scholarship applicants for their achievements and paid tribute to their parents and schools for their role.
