Tweed warns Facebook to expect more lawsuits over celebrity advertising scams
Defamation lawyer Paul Tweed has warned that Facebook faces a wave of lawsuits from celebrities whose likenesses are being used without permission in adverts on the social media platform.
Mr Tweed is representing RTÉ presenter Miriam O’Callaghan in a High Court case against Facebook over adverts fraudulently using her image.
He told The Times that he expects to lodge several more cases involving other prominent figures whose likenesses have been misused.
The social media platform insists that has removed a large number of adverts since it became aware of the problem.
However, Mr Tweed said: “The reality is that if this is going to be a problem, it is going to be ongoing until Facebook gets an algorithm in place that prevents it happening in the first place.
“Facebook should be capable, and is capable, of preventing this. Despite their protestations that they are [dealing with the matter], it has been going on for three clients of mine for a year.”
