UAE drops charges against Irish woman accused of attempted suicide
The United Arab Emirates (UAE) has dropped charges against an Irish woman who was facing trial for attempted suicide and alcohol consumption.
Tori Towey, 28, will be allowed to return to Ireland after UAE officials confirmed that a travel ban which had been imposed on her has now been lifted.
Human rights lawyer Radha Stirling, CEO of campaign group Detained in Dubai, said Ms Towey was a victim of domestic violence who had been failed by both Irish and UAE officials.
Her case made national headlines after being raised in the Dáil on Tuesday by Sinn Féin president Mary Lou McDonald.
Tánaiste and foreign affairs minister Micheál Martin said: “I warmly welcome the news that Tori Towey is now free to return to Ireland. I hope she will be able to do so as soon as possible.
“This is an outcome that Ambassador Alison Milton, officials, and our Embassy in UAE have been working on for the last while.
“We are glad for Tori and her family, and we wish her all the very best in the future.”
