UCD law students win The Irish Times Debate grand final

University College Dublin law students Aisling Tully and Dara Keenan (pictured) have won the team competition at the grand final of The Irish Times Debate 2017.
The two students representing the UCD Law Society in the annual student competition were asked to oppose the motion: ‘This House believes the women of Ireland should strike to repeal the Eighth Amendment’.
Activists campaigning for Ireland’s constitutional ban on abortion to be repealed are planning to stage a nationwide strike if a referendum on the Eighth Amendment is not called by 8 March 2017.
Mr Keenan said: “It is really humbling that we won considering the level of talent in the competition. Obviously to win it with Aisling was great, as she is an incredible debater. It was a lot of fun.”
The team argued that striking is “an overly simplistic and unnuanced” approach to the debate over abortion and the law.
Mr Keenan is in his second year of BCL Law with Politics and Ms Tully is in her second year of BCL Law with French.
As winners of the team competition, the pair will undertake a month-long debating tour of the USA this Spring.
Leah Morgan of the Solicitor’s Apprentice Debating Society of Ireland (SADSI) won first prize in the individual category.
