UK: Personal injury lawyers group launches anti-cold calling campaign

The Association of Personal Injury Lawyers (APIL), has launched a campaign targeting cold callers. The “can the spam” campaign has the backing of lawyers and includes a short video encouraging the public to report cold callers.

APIL president and managing partner of GLP Solicitors in Manchester Neil Sugarman said: “Cold calling for personal injury claims is exploitative, tasteless and intrusive.

“Solicitors are not allowed to do it, for these very good reasons.

“But some claims management companies continue to hound people in this way and we want the government to put a total ban on the practice.”

The APIL website states: “Cold calling for personal injury claims exploits vulnerable people. It is tasteless and intrusive. It generates the false perception that obtaining compensation for personal injury is easy, even when there is no injury.”

It adds: “Solicitors are already banned from making cold calls and sending nuisance text messages, and rightly so. But claims management companies (CMCs) are not banned from using cold calling and texting to drum up business in personal injury claims. We think they should be.”

APIL is encouraging people who have had unwanted calls to get in touch.

Information provided will be handed over to the Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO).
