US: Election workers defamed by Rudy Giuliani seek $43m damages
Election workers defamed by former Trump lawyer Rudy Giuliani are seeking $43 million in damages.
A jury is determining the appropriate level of damages after a federal judge ruled in August that Mr Giuliani defamed Georgia election workers Ruby Freeman and Shaye Moss in relation to his baseless claims of electoral fraud in the 2020 presidential election.
Among other claims, Mr Giuliani publicly accused the pair of “passing around USB ports like they were vials of heroin or cocaine” in CCTV footage which actually showed them exchanging a sweet while carrying out their work processing legitimate ballots.
The mother-and-daughter said they experienced a “living nightmare” when Trump supporters and conspiracy theorists began harassing them over the claims.
A court filing from their lawyer says they are seeking “a sum ranging from $15.5 million to $43 million”, NBC News reports.
Opening statements in the trial began yesterday and Mr Giuliani is expected to testify before it ends.
