William Aylmer recognised for role in corporate gender balance bill
Dublin solicitor William Aylmer has been recognised in the Oireachtas for his role in drafting a new law providing for gender balance on the boards and governing authorities of corporate bodies.
The Irish Corporate Governance (Gender Balance) Bill 2021, introduced as a private member’s bill by Fine Gael TD Emer Higgins, passed second stage in the Dáil yesterday with no TDs opposed.
Under the proposed law, companies with an annual turnover of over €750,000 and more than 20 employees will be required to meet new gender quotas.
Within the first year of the Act’s commencement, this will mean company boards need to be at least one third women and one third men. Within three years, the quota will be increased to 40 per cent.
Introducing the bill at second stage yesterday, Ms Higgins said: “I thank solicitor and Dublin Mid-West constituent, William Aylmer, for his assistance in drafting this bill. I am delighted he could be here today along with so many of my campaign team, given that they helped to get me here.”
Mr Aylmer has nearly three decades’ experience as a solicitor, with particular expertise in mediation, civil and commercial litigation, professional regulation, criminal injuries compensation and notarial services.
He is also a member of the Kevin Jacob-Bernard McCormack branch of Fine Gael in Dublin Mid-West.
