Woman appointed as examiner in legal first within day of High Court judge’s plea
Accountant Sarah-Jane O’Keeffe has become the first woman in Ireland to be appointed as an examiner, just one day after a High Court judge made a significant appeal for gender balance.
Ms O’Keeffe, who works for Baker Tilly, was appointed by Trim Circuit Court as interim examiner to the Eastern Seaboard bar, restaurant and bakery in Drogheda, TheJournal.ie reports.
She is the first woman in Ireland to be appointed as an examiner since the examinership system was introduced under the Companies (Amendment) Act 1990, a fact highlighted by Mr Justice Robert Haughton earlier this week.
Mr Justice Haughton, who manages the Commercial Court list, said on Monday that he strongly encouraged the appointment of more women as court-appointed liquidators and examiners.
According to The Irish Times, the judge said a “prize” awaits the first law firm to nominate a woman as examiner.
Eastern Seaboard was represented in court by solicitor Barry Lyons and Ross Gorman BL.
