Women lawyers’ group disappointed with referendum outcomes
The Irish Women Lawyers’ Association (IWLA) has said it is “disappointed” with the outcome of the referendums on family and care in its first statement since the results came in.
The association’s standing committee had endorsed a Yes-Yes vote in the referendums, while expressing regret that the proposed wording did not match that of the Citizens’ Assembly.
Both proposed amendments were rejected by overwhelming majorities on 8 March.
In a statement yesterday, the IWLA committee said it respects the outcome and felt that “the level of engagement with our members on the important issues of women’s role in society, care and equality are a positive”.
“We will continue to advocate for and contribute to the fruitful and positive discussion of the important issues of women’s role in society, care and equality that the referendum prompted,” it added.
