Women lawyers reach out to environmental NGOs to help tackle climate change
A new group of women lawyers is reaching out to environmental NGOs to find out how they can best contribute their legal experience to the fight against climate change.
The climate justice sub-group of the Irish Women Lawyers’ Association (IWLA), inspired by the former president of Ireland, Mary Robinson, met for the first time on Saturday.
The former president and barrister, who recently published a new book called Climate Justice, delivered an address on climate change to the IWLA in June following the association’s AGM.
The new sub-group is chaired by Gráinne McMorrow SC and is made up of Rosemarie Hayden, Caroline Conroy Keeley, Emilie Quigley Sammon, Kelly Mackey, Paula Cullinan, Hilkka Becker and Lily Casey BL.
At the sub-group’s inaugural meeting, members agreed to focus their efforts by talking to groups already active on the issue of climate change, such as environmental NGOs, to find out what legal assistance is required.
Groups have been encouraged to send their “legal wishlist” to iwlaclimate@gmail.com.
Lawyers interested in getting involved with the work of the sub-group can email contact@iwla.ie.
