NI: Belfast MP works ‘10-20 hours per week’ as lawyer
Solicitor John Finucane has an “expected commitment of 10-20 hours per week” at his firm Finucane Toner following his election as MP for North Belfast, Sinn Féin has said.
The party issued a clarification after opposition figures questioned the register of financial interests lodged with Westminster authorities, which has said since January that Mr Finucane receives £4,672 a month “in return for an expected commitment of 40 hours a week”.
The prominent lawyer, the son of murdered solicitor Pat Finucane, has previously spoken about balancing his legal and political careers. Last year, he said he was putting his legal career on hold during his tenure as Lord Mayor of Belfast.
A spokesperson for Sinn Féin told The Irish News: “When registering his interests Mr Finucane declared an ‘expected commitment’ of 40 hours per week with Finucane Toner Ltd, not a guaranteed commitment of 40 hours per week.
“As has been stated in February, the expectation that Mr Finucane would work 40 hours per week was ‘outdated and inaccurate’.
“For the avoidance of doubt, the registry has been updated to indicate an expected commitment of 10-20 hours per week to Finucane Toner which, if utilised, would be accommodated around his primary role as MP for North Belfast.
“Mr Finucane has at all times complied with his obligations to the register of interests.”
